We are proud to be able to offer a selection of watercolours by

 Frederick H. Partridge (1849 – 1929)

of which the above is an example.  Handsomely framed in a gilt decorative moulding, and mounted using cotton rag mat board with line and wash, and glazed with float glass incorporating a UV barrier for maximum protection.

It is a little over 100 years ago that FH Partridge started painting watercolours in his own very recognisable style.

Born in 1849, Partridge was a King’s Lynn solicitor, following in his father’s footsteps; he lived his early years in King’s Lynn before moving to Hunstanton.  Partridge was Registrar and High Bailiff of the County Court and District Registrar of the High Court.  He always interested himself in Sport and was himself a keen sportsman.  He was closely connected to football in King’s Lynn and captain of probably the first club in the town, also captain of the swimming club, the rowing club and a good lawn tennis player.  Golf at Hunstanton was one of his major sports and he captained the club in 1911.

However it is from his collection of charming landscapes that he is now best known.  He painted from Castle Rising in the West to Blakeney in the East.  Many of his works include the sea, dunes and marshes; some of the best known being Gore Point just off Holme-next-the-Sea (and the ‘Northernmost point in Norfolk) and Scolt Head off Brancaster Staithe.

Frederick Partridge also painted some lovely watercolours of local Golf Courses, including Hunstanton, the Royal West at Brancaster and Yarmouth and Caistor.  He ventured into Suffolk and to the Royal & Ancient at St. Andrews – the home of Golf – in Scotland.

Americans are keen collectors of golf art and Partridge’s works are to be found in private homes in the USA.  Two of his Norfolk scenes were recently exhibited in Australia.

Partridge’s watercolours are easily recognisable – the skies he painted in Norfolk have their own lovely and very distinctive character.  He was still painting in his 80th year.

Partridge’s works are infrequently seen in Galleries and Auction Houses.
